TC TUTORING 11+ PLYMOUTH

Background & Philosophy

In 2022, I made the decision to stop working in the mainstream school environment and change the emphasis to concentrate fully on tutoring. In my 20 years of teaching in Devon (Plymouth)  and Cornwall, I was a maths specialist/coordinator and senior leader for 10 years. I also spent  4 years in the  public sector as a Deputy Headteacher. During my career,  I also gained a PGCE  in mathematics and a Masters degree in education - in addition I have been fortunate to have gained some excellent continuing professional development - the most valuable being my involvement with the Cornwall maths hub which has been instrumental in raising the standards of teaching and learning of mathematics.

Away from education, my family have lived in Plymouth for the past 23 years and  love everything the area has to offer. A lot of my time during this period was spent with Woolwell JFC, a club which I formed with Andy Barnes back in 1998, lots of great memories!
In terms of my teaching career, it  has been predominantly spent in year 6 - mainly due to my ability to get good  results and obtain the best for all pupils. I am looking forward to a change of emphasis from the management side and going back to working on the learning with the students - my aim is to  use my wealth of experience and  expertise to continue my success rate - I always provide children with the confidence and support  needed to succeed. My philosophy relies on good relationships with the children; building on their potential; maintaining a 'can do' approach and achieving the best possible progress by using insightful ways to assist with the learning process.
The focus for lessons will be on making it enjoyable for the children and building on their understanding and accelerating individual progress -  be it for a test (SATS/GCSE or 11 plus) or if it is for the purpose of raising attainment or confidence. I  will always encourage a positive approach from students and the emphasis will be on working to the best of individual ability.
