Background & Philosophy

In 2018, I made the decision to scale back on working in the mainstream school environment and change the emphasis to concentrate more fully on tutoring. In my 20 years of teaching in Devon (Plymouth)  and Cornwall, I was a maths specialist/coordinator and senior leader for 10 years. My last 4 years in the  public sector were spent as a Deputy Headteacher. During my career,  I also gained a PGCE  in mathematics and a Masters degree in education - in addition I have been fortunate to have gained some excellent continuing professional development - the most valuable being my involvement with the Cornwall maths hub which has been instrumental in raising the standards of teaching and learning of mathematics. I have been involved in some research with them which has followed on from the mastery principles and the use of manipulatives to help mathematical understanding.

Away from education, my family have lived in Plymouth for the past 23 years and  love everything the area has to offer. A lot of my time during this period was spent with Woolwell JFC, a club which I formed with Andy Barnes back in 1998, lots of great memories !  The focus seems to have changed to swimming at the moment and that story is ongoing...
In terms of my teaching career, it  has been predominantly spent in year 6 - mainly due to my ability to get good  results and obtain the best for all pupils. I am, however,  looking forward to a change of emphasis from the management side and going back to working on the learning with the children - my aim is to  use my wealth of experience and  expertise to continue my success rate - I always provide children with the confidence and support  needed to succeed. My philosophy relies on good relationships with the children; building on their potential; maintaining a 'can do' approach and achieving the best possible progress by using insightful ways to assist with the learning process. Pupils will keep a record of the sessions for revision purposes but there will also be plenty of opportunity for practical tasks.

The focus for lessons will be on making it enjoyable for the children and building on their understanding and accelerating individual progress -  be it for a test (SATS/GCSE or 11 plus) or if it is for the purpose of raising attainment or confidence. I  will always encourage a positive approach from students and the emphasis will be on working to the best of individual ability.

Professionalism and  Excellence.

All tutoring will be carried out at my family home in Hartley (Central Plymouth). Secondary maths students will be taught on a 1:1 basis and 11+ children in small groups (up to a maximum of 3 per group). Regular (weekly) lesson feedback will be provided to parents and the children will also be routinely assessed to establish their levels of progress.

Sessions  can be flexible in terms of the length of teaching blocks, please call to check availability and make arrangements.

Session details

11 Plus sessions will run for the full year (beginning in September) with a commitment of one session per week. The initial focus will be on building up the children's confidence through their development of knowledge, skills and understanding. There will be separate subject related blocks of learning (reading comprehension, writing, grammar/punctuation  and maths) culminating in a greater focus on the test in the run up to the 11 plus examination in the following September.

GCSE maths (foundation and higher) tutoring will also be for the full year duration and focus on ensuring that students are confident across the whole syllabus. There will be a greater emphasis on exam technique and past paper revision as the exams approach in May.

All tutoring, including KS3 maths, will be allocated on a first come, first served basis - for some pupils, the time spent with me may be longer than one year but if you have a 1:1 slot, you wont lose it after one year if you wish to continue!

Available days/times:

Midweek sessions run from 4pm - 9pm (hourly slots) and weekend sessions (Sunday) are also available (hourly slots).

Spaces will  be filled according to request and availability.

Please inform me if you have any further queries or if there are any specific needs that I need to be aware of in respect to your child.
